Summer Plant Tips

Have you seen our tips on WTKR Channel 3? Click here for some more for you to try at home. Plus, tips below, you will find in the latest BLOOM!, our member newsletter.

Tips from Marcus Jones , Curator of Woody Plants

  • As the heat and lack of water during the summer start to affect your plants, scout early for spideEchinacea paradoxar mites. Place a piece of white paper under the stem of your plant and shake the plant.  If you see mites, treat by spraying the plant with horticulture oil, soaps, or plain water. Try these remedies before using a miticide. The best prevention is good irrigation.

  • Near the middle of August, give roses one last good pruning. Remove all the dead heads and even the ones that are not quite spent. This will initiate the wonderful final full bloom in the fall.

  • It’s not too early to start planning for fall planting and fall over-seeding for lawns. Many garden centers will be selling trees and shrubs before winter, so you might find a very good deal. Fall is the best time of year to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials since they develop more root systems over the winter months.

  • August is a good time to remove air layers you may have applied in the spring. Pot them in 3-gallon pots to grow over the next twelve months. Then, plant them in the following fall. Still not sure what to do – join the Virginia Camellia Society for the August 7 air-layering workshop in the Hofheimer Camellia Garden.

  • Fire blight is a summer problem distressing many ornamental fruit tree and shrub species (crabapple, cotoneaster, pyracantha, etc.). It usually is seen as single branches turn bright red and suddenly die. Removal of infected branches with sanitary pruning techniques will help prevent the disease from spreading to other plants.
