The Enchanted Storybook Forest Summer Exhibit 2010

Enter the magical world of the Enchanted Storybook Forest, a collection of eight storybook playhouses created by local builders, architects and organizations. Each house is based on a classic children’s story or nursery rhyme with a plant, garden, nature or conservation theme. Located in the Enchanted Forest, the exhibit is free with paid admission to the Garden. From the Grand Opening on June 20 until the closing on Monday, September 6, 2010, there is a schedule of free and paid programs and gnome antics.

Acorn Academy

A gathering place under the trees for storytelling, book sharing, arts and crafts and lessons on nature from the gnomes and their helpers. Activities include:

  • Daily story times: Noon to 1 pm
  • Daily arts and crafts: 1- 2 pm

Gnome Homes

building a gnome homeEnter this magical area, with a special entry just for kids, where children and families build tiny woodland gnome homes using fallen sticks, leaves and other natural materials.  Activities include:

  • Build a gnome home
  • Explore the built gnome homes
  • Take your picture with a family of gnomes
  • Play with natural building blocks on tree stump tables
  • Play Checkers or Tic-Tac-Tree on game boards carved on tree stumps

Tree Trek Trail and the Tiny Tree Trek Trail

Exercise your sense of adventure on this blazing trail made of tree trunks and tree stumps of various sizes. Activities include:

  • Jump, balance and walk
  • Discover the inside of a tree
  • Tiny Tree Trek Trail: a mini trail that is just right for toddlers.

Programs and Activities

All programs are designed to enhance the horticultural and environmental literacy of our visitors. Special programs, classes, and activities will occur throughout the exhibit.

Daily Activities

  • tree stump gamesTree Cookie Decorations: Create a family crest or an environmental message for the gnomes on a slice of tree, then hang it in the forest for them to read at night. (while they last)
  • Daily storytime: Noon to 1 pm daily at the Acorn Academy
  • Daily staff guided activities at selected playhouses 1-2PM
  • Build a gnome home
  • Play checkers or tic-tac-tree
  • Play on the Tree Trek Trail
  • Play in WOW Children’s Garden
  • The Great Tree Journey: Follow the Gnome’s path of Tree Knowledge to learn the mysteries of old tree growth.

The Garden hosts special outdoor exhibits each summer. The outdoor setting provides a beautiful location for large scale exhibits that are thoughtful and interactive.
