This is a native vine that will grow 10 to 20 feet. It is perfect for growing on fences, trellises and arbors. It may be semi-evergreen in this area but is often deciduous. It grows best in acid or neutral soil, prefers full sun but tolerates shade.
The John Clayton cultivar is bright yellow (the species is orange-red to red) and was found growing in Gloucester, Virginia. It is named for John Clayton, a colonial botanist who collected plants for the 18th century Flora of Virginia.
