All American Rose Selection

Norfolk Botanical Garden is one of 23 gardens in the country that is a test garden for the All-America Rose Selections Program. For more information about the AARS program, click here.

As part of the testing program, we evaluate roses provided by AARS in a two year blind trial. Our trial beds are located near the greenhouse, just north of the Flowering Arboretum. Plants are only identified in this test bed with serial numbers. Our staff judges are not provided breeder or introduction information about the roses and only refer to the plants by these numbers. Previous AARS winners are planted in the Bicentennial Rose Garden. Their AARS status is marked on the plant label.

Roses in the trial are evaluated using the following criteria:
  • Novelty
  • Form - both buds and open bloom
  • Color during the blooming cycle
  • Aging quality
  • Flowering effect
  • Fragrance
  • Stem/cluster form
  • Plant habit
  • Vigor
  • Foliage
  • Disease resistance
  • Repeat bloom quality
