Hamamelis x intermedia 'Arnold's Promise'
This is a hybrid between a Japanese Witchhazel (Hamamelis japonica) and a Chinese Witchhazel (Hamamelis mollis). The cultivar was introduced by the Arnold Arboretum in 1963. The name Hamamelis comes from two Greek words, hama, meaning "at the same time" and melon, meaning "fruit or apple." It is a reference that the flowers bloom at the same time the fruit from the previous year matures on the plant.
This plant is a great winter shrub that blooms from late January to early March. It can reach 20 feet tall and spread as wide. It has fragrant, delicate flowers with strap-like petals.
