Meet the Guests of Honor

In the Butterfly House
Monarch Monarch on butterfly weed - photograph by Kemp Savage Host Plants Milkweeds including common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), swamp milkweed (A. incarnata), butterfly weed (A. tuberosa) and showy milkweed (A. speciosa)
Nectar Plants Nectar from all milkweeds. Also - dogbane, lilac, red clover, lantana, thistles, composites including goldenrods, blazing stars, ironweed and tickseed.
Painted Lady Painted Lady - photograph by Pat Hacker Host Plants A wide variety but favorites include thistles (Asteraceae), hollyhock and mallow (Malvaceae), and various legumes (Fabaceae).
Nectar Plants Prefers nectar from composites 3-6 feet high, especially thistles. Also likes aster, cosmos, blazing star, ironweed, and joe-pye weed. Flowers from other families that are visited include red clover, buttonbush, privet, and milkweeds.
Black Swallowtail Host Plants The parsley family (Apiaceae) including Queen Anne's Lace, carrot, celery,  and dill
Nectar Plants Red clover, milkweed, thistles and others.
Giant Swallowtail Giant Swallowtail
Host Plants Trees and herbs of the citrus family including Citrus species, prickly ash, hop tree and Common Rue (Ruta graveolens).
Nectar Plants Lantana, azalea, bougainvilla, bouncing Bet, dame’s rocket, goldenrod, Japanese honeysuckle and swamp milkweed.
Gulf Fritillary Gulf Fritillary - photography by Pat Hacker Host Plants Various species of passion-vine including maypops (Passiflora incarnata) and running pop (P. foetida).
Nectar Plants Lantana, shepherd's needle, cordias, composites and others.
