Special Summer Exhibit

Mother & ChildMutambo

An Outdoor Stone Sculpture Exhibition

June 15 – October 12

Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Garden’s creation by 220 local African Americans, by visiting MUTAMBO.  This outdoor art exhibition features more than 70 large stone sculptures created by Zimbabwe artists.  “Mutambo” depicts art, beauty and the people of the African Peacockcontinent. Through their work, the artists believe “spirits are being freed from the stone.”  The sculptures were shipped from the famous Shona Sculpture Park in Zimbabwe and are placed throughout the Garden in carefully selected landscaped areas. Some may be viewed from the tram; others will be discovered as you walk through the Garden.

It is a rare opportunity to view such a significant international art collection in an outdoor setting that encompasses 155 acres with 30 themed gardens.

More about the Shona SculpturesFamily

Called "perhaps the most important art form to emerge from Africa in this century" by Newsweek, noted collectors of Shona art include Whoopi Man and His ShadowGoldberg, Queen Sofia of Spain, Lou Rawls, Jimmy Stewart, Cecily Tyson, Harry Belafonte, the Prince of Wales, the Rockefeller Family, and Danny Glover.  Many of the world’s leading museums, such as the Rodin Museum in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Museum of Mankind in London showcase Shona sculpture in their permanent collections. Pablo Picasso, founder of the modernist movement, was an early admirer of Shona artwork. The striking simplicity and powerful lines characteristic of the Shona style are at once recognizable throughout much of Picasso’s, and other contemporary artists’ work.  The name of this summer exhibit at the Garden is Mutambo, which in the Shona language means “celebration”.
