2008 Season

 

During the winter, the eagles built a new nest, so the cam was relocated

The first egg was laid in the evening of Feb. 1. 

The owl startled the eagle during the egg laying process.

The owl was not attacking the eagles or looking to steal an egg as some reports have suggested

The second egg was laid on the evening of Feb. 4

We have since learned no egg was laid.

The female was chased from the nest and the eggs were abandoned

Eggs were removed from the nest on Feb. 19.

They will be examined by Center for Conservation Biology at William & Mary.

Permits to remove the eggs were provided by VDGIF and USFWS

On March 11, another juvenile was spotted near the nest

As the juvenile approached the tree, the female chased it away

The juvenile returned and perched above the nest for a few moments

After the resident female left, the juvenile visited the nest for a few minutes

The female lays the first egg of the second clutch, March 16

On March 19, a second egg was laid

 

On March 20, the sleeping pair were disturbed but something overhead. 

During the commotion, the incubating eagle apparently stepped on the eggs, breaking them.

Early that morning the female ate one of the broken eggs and the second that afternoon.

A new egg was laid around 12:20 pm on March 22
